Serologicals Corp. provides consumable biological products, and enabling technologies and services to life science companies and research institutions worldwide. It operates through two segments, Research and Bioprocessing. The Research segment sells specialty reagents, kits, antibodies, and molecular biology tools to research customers working in the areas of neuroscience, infectious disease, oncology, stem cell research, and cell signaling. This segment also supplies monoclonal antibodies, conjugates, antibody blends, and molecular and cell biology-based detection kits for use in diagnostic laboratories. In addition, this segment supplies tools for kinase research, as well as provides drug discovery services to pharmaceutical companies. This segment markets its research products and services under the Chemicon and Upstate brand names. The Bioprocessing segment sells purified proteins and tissue culture media components used primarily by biopharmaceutical and biotechnology companies as nutrient additives in cell culture media. Its product, EX-CYTE is used in combination with cell culture supplements to reduce or replace animal serum in cell culture processes. This segment also provides serum-based products, including Bovine Serum Albumin under the brand name Probumin. In addition, this segment sells recombinant human insulin under the brand name Incelligent for use as a media supplement. Further, this segment manufactures and sells monoclonal antibodies under the brand name MonoSera, that is used in products, such as blood typing reagents, and in controls for diagnostic tests for certain infectious diseases.
