Syringes have many different types there are luer lock, luer slip, catheter tips, and insulin. Luer lock syringes generally have tips that require needles that can be twisted and locked into place. The design helps prevent the needle from accidentally slipping off of the syringe. Non-Luer Lock syringes have tips that require needles that can be pressed onto the tip of the syringe without being twisted into place. Needles are made of hollow stainless steel. Needles consist of three parts- The hub, which fits onto the tip of the syringe, The shaft, which is the long length of the needle, The bevel, which is the slanted tip of the needle The bevel creates a narrow slit/hole in a person's skin through which fluid in the syringe is injected into a person. Long beveled tips are generally sharper and narrower, which reduces discomfort when it pierces the skin. Many new, especially protein-based, biotechnologically manufactured medications, but also highly viscous or low-dosage drug formulations, and a series of oncologic and ophthalmologic medications make high demands of primary packaging. Medical device products’ manufacturers offers a wide range of prefillable plastic syringes especially for such applications. They are produced of COP (Cyclo Olefin Polymer) in an injection molding process in accordance with cGMP. COP (Cyclo-Olefin-Polymer) syringes are distinguished by a high degree of break resistance, glass-like transparency and very low oxygen permeation compared to other plastics. They can be used directly for aseptic filling. COP releases no alkali ions, which means that the risk of a pH value shift is elimimated. Production with injection molding process enables flexible designs - even customer-specific designs are possible. In comparison to glass more precise production tolerances are possible thanks to the exact injection molding. This makes a higher degree of customized solutions possible, for example, when a lower remaining volume is required. Syringe manufacturers also offer an extensive portfolio of prefillable glass syringes that are adapted to the current requirements of the pharmaceutical industry and fulfill the requirements of modern filling systems. Glass has many advantages over other packaging materials used for pharmaceutical primary packaging. Containers made out of glass are perfect for the storage and delivery of a wide range of injectable drugs including sensitive biotech drugs. This excellent raw material is the starting point for perfect pharmaceutical packaging containers or systems like prefillable syringes (PFS). Biotech derived drug products are characterized by several specific requirements. Some are highly viscous and, in individual cases, tend to interact with silicone oil or, for example, tungsten residues from syringe production. Syringes’ contract manufacturers therefore offer the “metal-free” production avoiding the use of metal pins. The special silicone oil treatment (baked-on RTF®) for the reduction of free silicone oil creates a perfect primary packaging material for these sophisticated drug products. To fulfil customized needs of customers, manufacturers can also offer syringes with thin-walled cannulas that ease the administration of the often highly viscous medications thanks to their improved flow properties. When shopping for needles, it is very important to know how they are classified. Needles are classified according to their length and diameter. Length ranges from .5" to 3" and the diameter is measured in gauges (i.e. 25-gauge needle would have a smaller diameter than a 19 gauge needle). Blood collection and single use needles serve distinct purposes. Manufacturers ensure that the needles are designed to offer maximum protection and are ground on high-precision machines and assembled and packed on totally automated machines with vision camera quality controls for enabling superior sharpness to ensure injections with minimal pain.
