Blow-Fill-Seal (BFS) Technology

Packaging >> Materials >> Blow Fill Seal (BFS)

Curida’s core competency is in state-of-the-art manufacturing of sterile liquid pharmaceuticals based on unit-dose Blow-Fill-Seal (BFS) technology, ensuring a high quality, fast and robust process with minimal human intervention

Blow-Fill-Seal (BFS) technology refers to a manufacturing technique used to produce small, and large volume liquid and semi solid-filled containers. BFS is widely considered to be the superior form of aseptic processing by various medicine regulatory agencies including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the packaging of pharmaceutical and healthcare products. Blow Fill Seal is a continuous, form-fill-seal process which utilizes a single machine, plastic is heated, liquefied and “blown” into a custom mold to form a container. The container is then immediately and precisely “filled” and hermetically “sealed. BFS vials and bottles are ideally suited for unit dose applications of liquids for the pharmaceutical and medical device industries. The unit dose applications are typically used in ophthalmic products (eye drops and gels), inhalation solutions (nebulized solutions or suspensions), and in the application of a topical or orally dispensed material (gel, cream, ointment, or aqueous liquid). The BFS or Form Fill Seal (FFS) technology creates, fills and seals the primary sterile container in less than 15 seconds. The aseptic filling machine effectively contains and maintains the class A filling conditions within the machine, reducing the amount of controlled space required and minimizing process variables whilst simultaneously eliminating human intervention. BFS technology is used widely in the sterile manufacturing of respiratory and ophthalmic products where the sectors were early adopters of the technology and have benefited from innovative primary packaging solutions. Pharma packaging companies offers a complete range of BFS packages available for Rx, OTC and Nutraceutical product- Small doses: 0.25 mL – 5 mL (Sterile eye drops, Rx, OTC and Nutraceutical products), Medium doses: 5 mL – 30 mL (Rx, OTC and Nutraceutical products), Large doses: 30 mL – 120 mL (Rx, OTC and Nutraceutical products), Vaginal Applicators: 1 G – 5 G (Rx and OTC products). CMO for BFS are set up to meet stringent pharmaceutical standards, perform test fillings, and realize production batches or small-scale series for clients.
