Infrared (IR) microscopy, also known as infrared microspectroscopy, is a type of light microscopy that uses a source that transmits infrared wavelengths of light to view an image of the sample. Unlike other optical microscopes with absorbent glass optics, an infrared microscope has reflective optics to allow the microscope to cover the entire spectral range of infrared light. When performing failure analysis, it is oftentimes necessary to investigate the heterogeneity of the sample surface. FTIR-Microscopy is the tool of choice! During FTIR-Microscopy, molecules absorb the applied infrared radiation at their characteristic vibrational modes. The wavelength and intensity of the absorbed light is recorded and allows for identification of functional groups present at the surface or in the sample bulk depending on the analysis mode. This proves not only useful during failure analysis but for the non-destructive deformulation of small (micron sized), precious samples. FTIR-Microscopy can also help to indicate the presence of an inorganic material in many cases such as identification of a filler in a polyethylene sample. With a minimum spot size of 10-15 µm and various acquisition modes (transmission, reflectance and ATR), in situ chemical functional group mapping can be performed. The IR solution demonstrates its strengths, especially for process development and optimization by simple peak analysis and trend monitoring. The main applications are today in the laboratory a pilot plants. The MATRIX-MF can be equipped with various detectors and probes and adapted to the specific requirements of a process application. The strengths of the NIR solution are mainly in routine process applications. Due to the short measuring time, important process parameters for the monitoring and control are available almost immediately. A wide variety of probes or flow cells allow the use of NIR technology in almost all process conditions. Numerous installations in the chemical, petrochemical and polymer industry as well as in the field of food and feed and the pharmaceutical production processes prove our experience. A near infrared spectrometer (also known as NIR spectrometer) is an analytical instrument used to examine pharmaceutical, chemical or medical materials in bulk, with very little sample preparation. Near infrared spectrometers offer spectral wavelength ranges around 12,500 to 4000 cm-1 or more. NIR spectrometers use high precision diode array detectors and silicon or lead-sulfide CCDs, which are generally more sensitive. Because of the diverse range of applications for NIR spectroscopy, these NIR spectrometers can be reconfigured to accommodate both liquid and solid samples, including compatibility with many flow-cell types for assay analysis. Ease of use, multiple-sample capacity, and portability make these high-throughput, near infrared spectrometers perfect for many laboratory environments.
