For more than 160 years, Morton Salt has served as a symbol of excellence and a trusted authority on salt. Today, Morton Salt, Inc. remains a leading salt producer in North America.
Our consumer products include table and specialty salts, water softening products and ice melters. Morton also supplies salt to a wide range of industries, such as food and pharmaceuticals. Our ice control products include salt sold in bulk to municipalities, state departments of transportation, governmental agencies, and roadway maintenance contractors for highway and roadway de-icing during the winter weather season.
In the U.S., our products are marketed under the Morton® brand – along with the iconic Morton Salt Umbrella Girl and our famous slogan – "When It Rains It Pours®", which are both registered trademarks of Morton Salt, Inc. In Canada, our products are sold by our subsidiary, K+S Windsor Salt Ltd., under the highly recognizable Windsor® brand and registered castle design.
Based in Chicago, IL, Morton Salt, Inc. and its subsidiaries employ nearly 3,000 people in the U.S., Canada and the Bahamas. In October 2009, we became a part of a group of companies led by K+S Aktiengesellschaft (the "K+S Group"), the world's leading producer of salt and one of the world's leading suppliers of standard and specialty fertilizers.
The Early Years
Morton's roots were established in Chicago in 1848. At the time, Chicago's population was just 20,000 but it was already becoming a transportation hub due to its access to the Great Lakes and to the expanding settlements along the extensive Mississippi River system.
In 1879, eight years after the Great Chicago Fire, Joy Morton bought an interest in the company. In 1886, he increased his share to acquire a majority interest in the company and renamed it Joy Morton & Company.
The firm was incorporated as the Morton Salt Company in 1910. By then the company was both a manufacturer and a merchant of salt. Among its products were a free-flowing salt in a round package with a patented spout for consumer households, and various bulk salt grades for farm and industry.
