5.5 Mechanism of Action

Noscapine's antitussive effects appear to be primarily mediated by its sigma receptor agonist activity. Evidence for this mechanism is suggested by experimental evidence in rats. Pretreatment with rimcazole, a sigma specific antagonist, causes a dose-dependent reduction in antitussive activity of noscapine.

Noscapin CEP

A Noscapin CEP of the European Pharmacopoeia monograph is often referred to as a Noscapin Certificate of Suitability (COS). The purpose of a Noscapin CEP is to show that the European Pharmacopoeia monograph adequately controls the purity of Noscapin EP produced by a given manufacturer.
