Cancer treatment was revolutionized by the introduction of so-called immune checkpoint inhibitors, that enhances the immune response against the patient’s own tumor. However only about 30% of cancer patients find benefit from such therapies. It is well accepted that for a productive anti-cancer immune response to happen, all elements of the cancer-immunity cycle need to be functional: tumor-antigen release, antigen-processing, -presentation, T-cell activation and blockade of local immunosuppression in the tumor.
