FDA warns some antibiotics can cause fatal heart damage
Fluoroquinolone antibiotics can, in some patients, increase the occurrence of rare but serious ruptures or tears in the main artery of the body, called the aorta, a US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) review found.
Certain antibiotics can cause painful and sometimes fatal damage to the body’s main artery, the Food and Drug Administration said Thursday.
USFDA has ordered safety labelling changes for the antibiotics to strengthen the warnings about the risks and make them more consistent across the labelling for all fluoroquinolones. Fluoroquinolone, a commonly used antibiotic in India for the treatment of a range of bacterial infection, has come under the US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) scanner for its effect on mental health and for causing low blood sugar adverse reactions, including coma.
